What is the pain management spinal cord stimulation system?
A spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system is a type of pain management treatment that uses small electrical impulses to alleviate chronic pain in the back, legs, knees, feet, neck arms, and hands. It involves the implantation of a small device, called a neurostimulator, which sends small electrical impulses to the spinal cord or specific spinal nerves, correcting the abnormal signals that cause the pain. Currently, the two types of SCS systems are the Dorsal Column SCS and Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) SCS. The SCS is typically used for patients with chronic pain conditions such as failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS, RSD), or any neuropathic pain due to nerve damage. It is considered a safe and effective treatment option for chronic pain and may be used in combination with other pain management modalities, such as medication, injections and physical therapy. The best thing about Spinal Cord Stimulation as a treatment is the one week trial period that is done before the actual implant, where the patients can experience the pain relief that will be provided by the permanent implant.
